Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsA auto body shop is an odd product for search advertising. Nobody browses for fun. A driver types "collision repair near me" from a parking lot, from a tow truck cab or from the couch with a quote from somebody else in hand. The ad has seconds to look like a safe, local, capable choice. It also has to avoid the clicks that cost money and bring nothing: people hunting for auto body shop jobs, paint supplies, junkyard fenders or a how-to video for popping out a dent. This guide walks through how we structure Google Ads for repair shops, what goes in and out of the keyword list, when the phone should be live, how to draw the map and how to tell whether an ad produced an estimate or only a click.
Who is on the other end
The accident driver is shaken, often has a claim number and is being told by an adjuster, a tow yard or a relative where to take the car. They search for reassurance as much as for an auto body shop: reviews, how a claim is handled, rental car help, whether the work is warrantied. The cosmetic driver has a keyed door, a scraped bumper or a shopping-cart dent and no claim at all. That person is comparing price and is happy to send photos. The hail or weather driver has a roof, hood and trunk full of dimples and a deductible to think about. The fleet or commercial owner has several vehicles, wants a contact person and cares about downtime.
Each of these drivers uses different words, accepts different ads and needs a different landing page. A single campaign for "auto body" treats them all the same and lets the platform guess. We separate them so each budget can be watched on its own and so a quiet week for hail work does not hide the fact that dent repair is paying.
One honest limit belongs here. In many accident claims the driver is already steered to an auto body shop by the insurer, a tow company or a dealership before ever opening a browser. Rules about a driver's right to pick a repair facility differ by state and by policy, and this page is not legal advice. Search ads reach the drivers who are choosing for themselves, and they tend to be a mix of claim customers who chose independently and customers with no claim. Plan for that, rather than for every accident in town.
Structure
| Campaign | Drivers it is meant for | Search ideas it might match | What the page and ad should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collision and accident repair | Post-accident, claim open or about to be | collision repair near me, accident repair shop, car auto body shop after accident, frame straightening | Lead with claim help, rental coordination, warranty on workmanship and a quick photo estimate |
| Dent and ding repair | Cosmetic damage, often no claim | dent repair near me, paintless dent repair, door ding repair, hood dent removal | Show a photo upload, a plain description of what can and cannot be repaired without paint |
| Bumper, scratch and paint | Parking lot and low-speed damage | bumper repair cost, car scratch repair, bumper paint, spot paint repair | Price framing in words, not numbers, plus an estimate request |
| Wheel and rim | Curb damage | wheel repair near me, rim straightening, curb rash repair | Small, separate budget so it does not drain the larger campaigns |
| Hail and weather | Storm-hit drivers | hail damage repair, hail dent removal, storm damage car repair | Switch on when a storm hits your area, switch off when demand settles |
| Fleet and commercial | Business vehicles, delivery vans, work trucks | fleet collision repair, commercial truck body repair, van auto body shop | A page aimed at managers with a named contact, turnaround and a way to send a list of vehicles |
| Brand | People who already know your name | your shop name, your auto body shop name reviews, your auto body shop name estimate | Cheap, and it keeps another advertiser from sitting beside your name |
Seven campaigns is the ceiling, not the goal. A shop with limited bays may start with collision, dent and brand, and add the others as the account proves itself.
Keywords
Start with the phrases that name a service and a place: "collision repair" with a town, "dent repair" with a neighborhood, "bumper repair" with a county. Next come urgency phrases such as "open now" and "near me", where the map and the call button matter more than long copy. After that come claim-related phrases, for example "body shop that works with my insurance" or "accident repair after a claim". These can convert well, but they need ad text and a page that explain how claims are handled without promising what an insurer will pay or approve.
Vehicle-specific searches deserve a closer look. A driver who types a make and model plus "body repair" often wants to know that the auto body shop has seen that car before. If you handle certain brands, aluminum panels, trucks or luxury models, those searches can justify their own ad groups and a gallery of the matching work. Where a manufacturer certification or an insurer program is held by your auto body shop, the ad may say so, and only then. We never write an affiliation into copy that the owner cannot document.
Match types matter more than usual here, because the word "body" attracts a wide net: auto body shop jobs, body kits, body filler, body work for classic cars you do not take. Phrase and exact matches give the most control while data is thin. Broad match can be tested later, once conversions are clean and the exclusion list is long, and it should be watched closely in the search terms report. The terms report is also a free education: it shows how drivers describe damage, and many of those phrases make good topics for pages on the website.
Negative keywords
Employment seekers
Hiring, careers, apprentice, technician pay, school and certification course terms bring people who want a paycheck or a class. They show up fast on broad phrases.
Self-repair shoppers
Body filler, sandpaper, touch-up pen, dent puller, repair kit, how to fix a dent and similar words signal a driver who will do the work personally, or who wants a part.
Parts buyers
Junkyard, used fender, salvage yard, aftermarket bumper and OEM part searches come from buyers who want an item, not a labor quote. If you sell parts at retail, treat that as its own small test.
Poor fit
Motorcycle, boat, RV, semi, mechanical repair, oil change, tires or windshield-only searches can drain a budget if you do not take that work. Add whatever you actually decline.
Hard to serve well
Cheapest, free repair and claims-fraud wording are worth reviewing before excluding. Some owners use them loosely, but a pile of them can signal traffic that will not become an estimate.
Outside the drive-time map
Add towns and cities past your radius, especially if a competitor's name or a neighboring brand is attached to them. Check the location report, not just the keyword list.
Call hours
A call from a driver in a crunched car is worth much more than a form entry two days later. That is why call-forward ads, call buttons and click-to-call extensions are central. They are also why a missed call costs a repair order. If your front desk closes at five, ads that stay live at eleven at night will collect calls that go to voicemail, and the driver will dial the next listing. We schedule ads around the hours someone answers, or build an after-hours path with a text-back message, a short form or a photo upload that you review first thing in the morning.
Weekends and Mondays deserve attention. Accidents do not respect the shop calendar, and many drivers search on a Saturday and call on a Monday. A schedule that mirrors your actual staffing and a clear voicemail greeting that names the auto body shop and offers a text number can recover many of those contacts. We also review the call report for short calls, missed calls and spam so the numbers match what the front desk experiences.
Geography
| Question | Why it matters for a auto body shop | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| How far will a driver travel for a repair? | People will go farther for a trusted shop than for an oil change, but a car with a hole in the bumper is not a pleasant long drive | Target by the cities and zip codes you want and compare to the location report |
| Where do tow yards and police reports send cars? | Tow patterns, not highways, often decide which shops see accident work | Make a note of nearby tow routes and lean campaign budget toward those towns |
| Which neighborhoods match your typical job? | Newer vehicles, aluminum panels and imports tilt toward some areas, work trucks toward others | Use location bid adjustments carefully and revisit them quarterly |
| Do commuters search near work? | Someone may live in one town and work in another | Include the area where people spend the day, and test location options for presence versus interest |
| Does a neighboring shop already own a town? | Spending heavily where a competitor is entrenched can raise costs | Concentrate on towns where your reviews, photos and drive time are strongest |
Landing and tracking
If the ad promises dent repair, the page opens with dent repair photos, a short list of what can be repaired without repainting and a way to send pictures. A generic home page forces the driver to hunt.
A form that lets the driver upload a few photos of the damage, add the vehicle and say whether a claim is open gets the auto body shop closer to a quote. Say clearly that a photo estimate is preliminary and the final number comes after an inspection and, where a claim is involved, after the insurer reviews it.
Tracked numbers by campaign show which ads produce phone calls and how long they last. Where recording is permitted by law, review a sample to see whether callers wanted collision work, a price over the phone or something you do not offer.
Count every photo submission as its own conversion and record the campaign and search term when available.
Once a month someone at the shop tells us which inquiries became written estimates and which became repair orders. That is the information that decides budgets, and no ad platform can see it unless you share it.
Budgeting
We do not quote cost-per-click figures because they vary by market, season and your own competitors, and any number we printed here would be a guess. A better way to set a budget starts with your own shop. Work out the average gross profit of a typical repair order, the share of written estimates that you close and the share of inquiries that become written estimates. Multiply them and you know roughly what an inquiry is worth to you. A campaign can spend up to that number per inquiry before it loses money, and a sensible target sits well below it.
Capacity belongs in the formula too. An auto body shop with eight open bays and a three-week backlog gains little from a surge of cosmetic work, while an auto body shop with an empty paint booth on Thursdays can profit from a campaign aimed at quick dent and bumper jobs. We use cycle time and bay availability as inputs, so ad spend moves toward the work you can finish well. Hail response is the extreme case: budget can rise fast after a storm, but only if the shop can really absorb the work, otherwise a promise of quick turnaround is hard to keep.
Ad copy
Echo the search
A driver searching for bumper repair should see bumper repair in the headline. Dent, scratch, collision and hail each deserve their own wording.
Reduce the fear
Rental car coordination, working with the driver's claim, written repair estimates and warranty details on workmanship answer the questions drivers actually have. Describe only services you provide.
Local proof
Street, town and hours let a driver judge distance and timing quickly. Call and directions buttons should be live.
Stay credible
Phrases such as the best shop, the lowest price or a perfect match invite scrutiny and may conflict with platform or state rules. Concrete facts about your process hold up better.
A single ask
Send photos for an estimate, call now or book a drop-off. Two options is plenty.
Pricing
Questions from shop owners
Management is $895 a month for Google Ads alone, $1,595 with a second platform and $2,295 with three. Click spend is separate and is paid to Google. Expect the click budget to depend on your market and your capacity, and expect us to ask for your repair order numbers so we can set it sensibly. No setup fee, no contract.
Some, yes, from drivers who choose their own shop. Many claims are directed elsewhere before a driver searches, and rules on choice of shop vary by state and policy, so check yours. We never imply a relationship with an insurer or manufacturer that the auto body shop does not hold, and we do not promise that a claim will be approved or paid.
Often a good idea, since those drivers frequently have no claim and decide faster. Keep them in their own campaign with a photo upload page so you can see the cost of those inquiries separately from collision work.
We prepare a hail campaign in advance, with its own budget, copy and page, and switch it on when your area is hit and the shop can take the work. When demand settles we pause it. Lead time and bay space should be honest on the page.
Usually broad match or missing negatives. We review the search terms often at the start, add exclusions for supplies, salvage and hiring, and tighten match types until the traffic looks like drivers who need a repair.
You do. The account sits in your name with your billing, and we manage it. If you part ways, the history and the account stay with you.
Yes. Many drivers see the map pack and the ad on the same results page. Location extensions can draw from your profile, and reviews on it strengthen both. See the guide to /auto-body-shop-google-maps-local-seo/ for the listing side.
Where to go next
Search ads are quick, but they stop the moment the budget stops. Most shops do better when ads share the stage with a strong listing, steady organic pages and a website that makes sending photos easy. The wider channel view is in /auto-body-shop-paid-ads/, the organic side is in /auto-body-shop-seo/, and the estimate form and trust pages are covered in /auto-body-shop-web-design/. If you want visual reminders to people who left your site without sending photos, read /auto-body-shop-meta-ads/. For the bigger picture of where inquiries come from, /auto-body-shop-lead-generation/ sets out what a good lead looks like.
